around the way celebrates the cool older girls who could turn a beauty supply store run into high-low luxury. their bamboo earrings, dark lip liner, and meticulously laid baby hairs became a visual language of confidence and self-possession. they were exactly who they thought they were.
these looks authored a new language of Black femininity, signaling a generation of Black women dressing in conversation with each other and with the aesthetics of our community, transforming adornment into an act of generational self-definition.
what it holds
confidence.
freedom.
effortless cool.
resourcefulness.
femininity with an edge.
the sizzle of the curling iron.
music loud enough to shake the windows.
the smell of Ampro Black Gel & oil sheen.
the sheen of Vaseline over dark lip liner.
the smack of a fresh layer of lip gloss.
work in progress
around the way began as a meditation on effortless style and the invisible labor of beauty.
I wanted the Bantu knots to feel sculptural and effortless, despite the care required to create them. much like the women who inspired this piece, every detail was considered, shaped slowly by hand, and assembled one knot at a time. the work of self-fashioning is rarely seen, but that’s precisely what makes a good look feel effortless.
