new jack swag honors the young Black men who came of age during a profound shift in culture. as politicians and the media increasingly reduced Black masculinity to a single narrative, these young men insisted on being more than the stories told about them.

they were cultural polyglots, moving effortlessly between the worlds of the street, the community, and the church. one night, it was silk shirts. the next, basketball shorts. gold chains worn with cocky confidence. haircuts that entered the room before they did. their style wasn't fashion for fashion’s sake. it was multiplicity and refusal. a declaration that even in the face of shrinking expectations, they decided what Black masculinity could (and would) look like.
